Sara Suchman is the Executive Director of the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector (NCMPS). Sara was one of the original 3 founding members of NCMPS in 2012, served in various capacities during its start-up years, and has been the Executive Director since 2020. She leads a dedicated team committed to expanding and strengthening publicly funded Montessori as a model for delivering equitable, accessible, sustainable, and humanizing education. Prior to joining NCMPS, Sara had been an elementary and middle school math and ESL teacher in both independent and public schools in the US and abroad. She taught and supervised in Harvard’s teacher education program and directed the Cambridge-Harvard Summer Academy. Sara holds an MAT in English as a Second Language (ESL) from the School for International Training, an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and an Ed.D. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

In this session, we will look at the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector’s origin story, how it has grown over the past decade, and what it is looking towards in the future. Along the journey, participants will learn about the particular context of Public Montessori in the US, factors that are conducive to thriving public Montessori and others that are challenging. We’ll share the current state of public Montessori in the US and some of the tools and approaches that NCMPS has developed in response to the challenges and needs in the field.
